I traveled to America’s second largest island, Alaska’s Kodiak to begin Natural Habitat Adventure’s Grizzly Ship: Kodiak to Katmai trip.
I arrived a day early and took a side trip hike to Marin Ridge with Kodiak Connection's Ani Thomas and another member of the NatHab tour. It was ... a lot for me. Too much for my brand new REI rain pants. (since replaced with Patagonias). But beautiful.
The NatHab tour begins with an exploration of the town of Kodiak.
Then we board sea planes for transfer to the M/V Ursus [previously the Time Bandit of Deadliest Catch fame], anchored in Geographic Harbor along the Katmai Coast.
From there, we embarked on a skiff to shore. In our chest waders, we tromped through streams and sedge to various locations, sat on 5-gallon buckets, and enjoyed the local brown bears (Ursus arctos) in their natural habitats (so to speak).
